on his agenda. one being the next secretary of defense. did you expect to see chuck hagel of all people so embattled from both sides? >> well, yes, sort of. yourn, you know that john mccain hates the guy. you know, he -- and he didn't create a lot of friends toward the end of his time and throughout most of his time as a senator. because he didn't really tow the party line on policy. he broke with republicans on the iraq war. and so he oftentimes would give democrats a way of saying what they were doing was bipartisan and then had the sheen of the veblt of a guy like hagel so it's this guy that's been a thorn in their side the whole time. now here he is he might be elevated to secretary of defense. and you could see that's going to bother the same types of people that seem to be bothered by every other person that's floated by obama. and that's mccain and graham and those fellas. >> but we've heard about this mccain not liking or hating chuck hagel. what's that about? what's their history? from one maverick to another. >> exactly. there's only so much room in the senate for mavericks. y

matter that rises immediately to the floor is who is going to be the secretary of defense. the person whose name has been floated this week is chuck hagel. republicans are trying to stop his potential nomination too, even though chuck hagel himself is a former republican senator. they think he is not right wing enough. chuck hagel does not just have critics on the right, though. on the left there is rumbling that democratic presidents should stop putting republicans in the secretary of defense job like bill clinton did with bill cohen and president obama already did once with bob gates. calling it the bizarre tradition of sorts where democratic presidents suddenly act like republicans are right, that only they, republicans, can run our national security affairs. so there is general criticism from the left that democrats should stop bolstering the myth that republicans are stronger on defense because they're republicans, and therefore, only republicans should run defense even when a democrat is president. but there is also this one very specific criticism of chuck hagel individually. i

on every american taxpayer and devastating defense cuts will go into effect in 10 days. the house has already passed bills addressing the fiscal cliff. we passed a bill replacing the president's sequestered with irresponsible spending cuts. we did that last may. we passed a bill to stop all the tax hikes on the american people scheduled to take effect january 1, and we did that august 1. and we proposed plans over and over again that democrats used to support but now will not. i do not want taxes to go up, republican do not want texas to go up. but we only when the house. democrats continued to run washington. what the president has proposed so far simply will not do anything to solve our spending problems. he wants more spending and more tax hikes that will hurt our economy. and he simply will not deal honestly with entitlement reform and the big issues facing our country. we need significant spending cuts and real tax reform to address our long-term debt problem and pave the way for long-term growth and real growth in jobs in our country. we will continue to work with colleagues in

on the possible nomination of senator hagel as the next secretary of defense. leon panetta has not announced a departure date. off and o fawn, chuck hagel's former staffers worked through the weekend trying to solidify support, but you hear concerns on both sides about his nomination. >> yeah. the thing is that will be causing some questions inside the senate particularly. there's been so much focused on susan rice, and the secretary of state. i don't know that people have been worrying as much about the next defense secretary. if there's anything you can say about him, he is his own man. while i think everyone likes him in the senate, it's not entirely clear how he would behave. there are some questions, for example, about his history on the homosexuals in the military. there's some questions about that. it's not entirely clear to me this will rise to the level as it did with susan rice, who remove her nomination in the last month or so. i don't know what the other options are, and with the secretary of state issue, you always had senator kerry as the option, which i think in the senate peo

week was a bill that restored the sequester cuts to defense and which did some incredible damage to social programs by getting rid of the social services bloc grant meaning meals on wheels eliminated and things like that. that was essentially a bill that dealt with spending. the house has proposed extending all of the bush tax cuts for all income levels. that is something that cannot pass the senate. so i'm not sure what boehner thinks is going to be amended in the senate because the whole thing would be scrapped. the senate bill that was passed in july was sort of a clean bill. it was flawed in the sense that it didn't deal with the alternative minimum tax and some other things, but it extended the rates for everything under $250,000. that's the bill that the president wants to see an up or down vote in the house. again, even if the house were to vote on that bill, it would still have to go bab to the senate because the house has to act first. so it's just a mess. >> okay. thanks, joy. thanks, leigh. thanks for sticking around. stay tuned at 5:45 or the president's statement. up
